Hussein Al-alak’s thoughts on a British-Iraqi Halloween

Who else is getting in a healthy supply of pumpkins, ahead of Halloween? While the excitement is tangible, nothing ever goes to waste. So, dust off those cookbooks!

Not only is this the spooky season, it’s also the excuse needed to make homemade pumpkin pie. That is a skill taught to me by my Aunt who lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

I don’t know about you but cinnamon and ginger are among my favorite Autumn spices.

But nothing beats the sight or smell of a carved out Jack-O-Lantern. As the nights draw in, the flicker of a candle calls out to all the kids trick or treating.

The excitement in young voices, parents telling their children to slow down as they race ahead and the variety of costumes is simply wonderful.

It’s always nice when local communities come together in celebration and conversation.
