Iraqi woman, children found hiding in lorry at Dutch port

A man, an Iraqi woman and two children have been found hidden in a lorry at the Dutch port of IJmuiden, Dutch military police said on Wednesday. The four were found hiding behind the lorry’s load during a routine check on Tuesday afternoon.

The lorry was about to board the evening ferry for the English port of Newcastle. The woman and her children have been taken to a refugee centre and the man, who was not part of the family, has been arrested for human trafficking.

The driver of the lorry is not facing any charges. Earlier this week, the Telegraaf said the number of illegal immigrants using the ferry terminal at Hoek van Holland to reach Britain is increasing. In total, 150 illegal immigrants were caught at Hoek van Holland in the first two months of this year, compared to 450 for the whole of 2015, the paper said.
