Iraqi's remember the Farhud, the NAZI backed pogrom against Iraqi-Jews

Jewish groups on Wednesday marked the 81st anniversary of the Farhud, a Nazi-inspired pogrom against Iraqi Jews, that marked the beginning of the end for a centuries-old community.

The massacre took place over the Jewish holiday of Shavuot in Baghdad on June 1st, 1941, following the downfall of the regime of Rashid Ali al-Gaylani, a nationalist who staged a pro-Nazi coup in Iraq weeks earlier.

By the time the violence ended on June 2nd, some 180 Jews are known to have been killed and hundreds more were left injured. An estimated 1,500 stores and homes had also been looted.
