Sort out EU nationals’ status before you go Cameron – New Europeans

Euro-campaigning body New Europeans has handed a letter in to Downing Street calling on outgoing PM, David Cameron, to sort out the long-term status of EU nationals living and working in the UK before he leaves office.

The letter urges Cameron to go beyond his statement that “nothing is going to change immediately”, and goes on to point out that EU citizens living in the UK and British citizens living in other EU member states need to know now that their long-term position and that of their families is secure.

It goes on to call on the PM to secure safeguards and commitments from EU member states, and from all UK parliamentary parties as soon as possible. It also asks him to secure such a commitment from the candidates in the Conservative party leadership election once their names are known Roger Casale, CEO of New Europeans, says in the letter that:

“EU citizens in the UK and British citizens in other EU member states took the decision to build their livelihoods outside their home member states on the basis that their rights to freedom of movement were secure.

“The referendum outcome is now creating real and avoidable anxiety and suffering on the part of individuals and families who have the right to know that they are still welcome and that their future is assured.”
