Iraqi Women Mobilise in Valentines Solidarity

I was delighted to see, that for Valentines Day 2017, delegates from the Iraqi Women’s League visited the diocese of Alqosh in Iraq, where they distributed gifts, in the Valentines spirit of love and solidarity. The gifts were received by those in the Church, who have been playing a central role in supporting Iraqi Christians, who were forcibly displaced by ISIS in 2014.

Since the 1950’s, the Iraqi Women’s League have played a key role in Iraqi society and were the first organisation to have a female elected, to a key government position in the entire Middle East. Outlawed under Saddam Hussain, the IWL resurfaced in Iraq after 2003, where they have since championed the causes for both women and human rights in Iraq.

Along with their work in Iraq, the Iraqi Women’s League also have representatives in other countries, including in the UK, where they organise activities and speak at a number of highly publicised events. If you would like to stay in contact with the IWL or would like a speaker for your own event, please e-mail: iwluk@hotmail.com
