A young Yazidi woman kidnapped and brutalised by Daesh has met the UK Foreign Office Minister, Baroness Anelay, for talks.
Nadia Murad, accompanied by AMAR’s Chairman, Baroness Nicholson, was in the UK to lobby senior politicians to back Yazidi calls for the mass murder and kidnap of Yazidi people to be declared a Genocide.
Ms Murad, who is 22 and from the town of Kojo, was taken prisoner in summer 2014. Her mother and six of her brothers were killed and she was kept as a sex slave for three months. During her captivity she was sold several times to different men and raped and assaulted repeatedly.
Since her release she has been determined to fight for justice for the Yazidi people and has travelled to many countries to tell her story. In December she addressed the UN Security Council about the current situation and again called for Daesh to be charged with Genocide.
Baroness Anelay told her that the UK was looking at all possible ways of helping the Yazidi people and she had recently visited the International Criminal Court in The Hague to find out the current thinking on the Genocide issue.
Speaking following the meeting, Baroness Nicholson said:
“What happened to Nadia and the thousands of other poor Yazidi women was absolutely shocking. Now, the world is finally waking up to the enormity of the crimes perpetrated against them. It is a Genocide. The sheer murderous brutality of the vile Daesh is almost beyond words.”
AMAR now runs two purpose-built clinics in the Kurdistan-region of Iraq dedicated to looking after Yazidi IDPs. It is hoping to announce the building of a third in the coming weeks.
