Iraq to Clear Landmines Across the Country

Iraq has contracted five foreign companies to clear mines and explosives from the country's border, desert and agricultural areas, the Ministry of Environment said Thursday (May 29th).

Operations will begin in June at gas and oil fields and will continue at agricultural, desert and border areas in southern, south-eastern, northern and central Iraq, said ministry landmines department director general Issa al-Fayyadh.

The companies will work on clearing mines and live ordnance before allowing oil companies and the agriculture sector to work in those areas, he said.

The step comes as part of the third stage of a campaign which began early last year to clear landmines left behind from past decades from Iraq, he said.
