Assyrian MP Slams West's Support for Terrorism in Syria

The Assyrian Universal Alliance says the West's support for terrorism in Syria is a violation of the principles of international law.

"The support of the West and the US for terrorism in Syria is the violation of international law and contradicts all their claims about advocating human rights and fighting terrorism," Younathan Betkolia, the secretary general of the alliance, said in a meeting with Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud.

He said that in his visit to Syria, he had realized the Syrian society is united and that the Assyrians in the Arab country are living a good life under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad.

He voiced support for efforts by the Syrian government to fight terrorism. Mahmoud, for his part, praised the Assyrian Universal Alliance's stances on fighting terrorism.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly crisis since 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.

The UN also says more than four million additional Syrians will be forced to flee their homes in 2014 by the escalating conflict in the country.

Two million Syrians are expected to take refuge outside the country while another 2.25 million are predicted to be internally displaced next year.
