Mandaic calligraphy is a unique style of art inspired by ancient alphabet. The Mandaic alphabet comes from an eastern dialect of Aramaic, the language spoken by The Christ. Mandaic is spoken by very few people in the world and is an endangered language in its homelands of Iraq and Iran, due to political and social instability.
Over the summer of 2016, the Liverpool City Library in Australia, was host to Mandaic Calligraphy and Painting: Inner Light Through an Ancient Alphabet, a unique exhibition by Iraqi artist Yuhana Nashmi. This was the first time an Iraqi-Mandaean exhibition had been produced in the Western world and this publication serves as a tribute to the remarkable efforts of Yuhana and Iraq’s Mandaean community.
