New ways sought to help Christians in the Lebanon

Aid to the Church in Need’s projects in southern Lebanon are mostly emergency in nature and are needed now more than ever before.

The foundation is already thinking of additional ways to help thousands of displaced people, many of whom have taken shelter in churches.

Marielle Boutros, project coordinator in Lebanon for the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) is already thinking of ways the foundation might be able to help now, following this new crisis.

“People are now living in church halls, so they will need food, sanitary products, mattresses, blankets, and if it continues, we will need heating for winter, though of course, we hope it will not last that long.”

“I am 37 years old, and I have experienced more than five wars in Lebanon. It is not easy to live in a country where one day, you are fine, and the next, you are hiding from missiles.“

"The trauma the people are experiencing now, and the trauma of having yet another war, will not be easily forgotten,” she says.

ACN have also reported that a religious Sister has remained in war-torn southern Lebanon to minister to thousands of Christians still in the region, despite ongoing airstrikes.

Speaking to Aid to the Church in Need, Sister El Beaino – who is the only member of her congregation remaining in the convent – said: “There are still some 9,000 Christians here in three different villages.”
