La Falfula Groove revives Iraqi maqam with “Walla Ajabni Jamalak”

La Falfula Groove, an ensemble of five musicians and one dancer, is dedicated to reviving the rich tradition of Iraqi maqam music. Their latest release, Walla Ajabni Jamalak, cements their commitment to preserving and celebrating this cultural heritage, writes Douglas Sanders in World Music Centre.

The group draws inspiration from the music of Yusef Zaarur, a renowned kanun player from Baghdad, and the great-grandfather of David Regev Zaarur, a key member of the ensemble. By combining singing, dancing, and instrumental excellence, La Falfula Groove offers a vibrant and engaging homage to the sounds of their ancestors, ensuring that the legacy of Iraqi maqam continues to thrive.
