On the 13th July 2024, Iraq took a significant stride in safeguarding child rights as the Government, through the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, inaugurated 44 National and Sub-National Childhood Care Units. These units are pivotal in ensuring access to essential protection services and promoting the well-being of children across the country.
"The launch of the National and Sub-National Childhood Care Units reflects Iraq's dedication to upholding the rights of every child," said Ahmed Al Asadi, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs. "These units will serve as strategic hubs for coordinating and enhancing child protection services, promoting safe environments, and supporting the holistic development of children and families."
Under the umbrella of the national child protection policy, these National Childhood Care Units will oversee and monitor child protection services nationwide, providing technical assistance, capacity building, and conducting research to inform evidence-based policies.
With 2 central units and 42 additional centers spread across different governorates, these facilities will play a crucial role in advancing Iraq's progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions, and SDG 3 on good health and well-being. This initiative aligns with Iraq's commitment to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
At the governorate level, the Sub-National Childhood Care Units will deliver localized services such as child protection case management, prevention programmes, family support services, and robust referral systems. They will collaborate closely with local communities, civil society organizations, and governmental agencies to ensure responsive and effective child protection measures.
"This initiative marks a significant step forward in Iraq's efforts to strengthen its child protection systems," said Sandra Lattouf, UNICEF Representative in Iraq. "By establishing these units, Iraq is advancing towards ensuring that every child is protected from violence, neglect, exploitation, and abuse, aligning with international standards and contributing to the achievement of SDGs related to child well-being."
Supported by comprehensive training programmes and technical assistance, the establishment of these units underscores Iraq's commitment to building a protective environment where every child can thrive.
