The Chilean community and friends held a march and rally on Saturday. Sheffield Live! reporter Steve Buckley spoke to organiser Maria Vasquez-Aguilar of the Chile Solidarity Network.

Below is an excerpt from a speech given by Fidel on 28 September 1973 to a million-strong rally in Havana, Cuba, gathered to celebrate the 13th anniversary of the foundation of the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution. “The [fascists] have even brought into the limelight the rifle with which Allende fought, the automatic rifle that we gave him, attempting to make vulgar and ridiculous propaganda with that. But events have demonstrated that the automatic rifle was the best present that could be given to President Allende in order to defend the Popular Unity government.
“The premonition and reason that we had in presenting the president with this rifle was great. Never was a rifle held in better hands than those of a constitutional and legitimate president of his people. Never has a rifle better defended the cause of the humble, the cause of the Chilean workers and peasants.” [applause] If every worker and every peasant had had in his
hands a rifle similar to that one, there would not have been a fascist coup. [applause] [the crowd chants rhythmic slogan]”
