Building Manchester solidarity for the people of Iraq

It was a pleasure to listen to Len McCluskey - General Secretary of Unite the Union - who spoke on Sunday at the May Day Festival, that was held at the Mechanics Institute in Manchester - the United Kingdom.

After speaking, we then had the opportunity to talk with Mr. McClusky, about the AMAR Foundation's efforts in health and education across Iraq, and the need for the UK's Trade Union's to help rebuild lives in Iraq.

It was also great to meet Ogmundur Jonsson of Pathfinder Books, who were at the May Day Festival and selling a range of topical titles. Just this year, Ogmundur has been to Iraq three times with Pathfinder Books; has visited Mosul, and has taken part in the Baghdad and Erbil book fairs.

As reported by Mr. Jonsson - whilst in Iraq - Pathfinder Books gave a generous donation, to help with the restoration of a public library in Bashiqa, just north of Mosul, which had fallen under the ISIS occupation in 2014 but had been destroyed in a 2013 terrorist attack.

The campaign for the library is being headed by Mohammed Ja'far, who ran the library prior to the attack. Mr. Ja'far informed Ogmundur Jonsson, that those who used the facility and are now backing the renovation work, are from Iraq's Yazidi, Shabak and Christian communities.
