The second edition of the Dewan Award for Architecture, in association with the regionally renowned Tamayouz Excellence Award programme, has been announced.
Under the heading: "Empowering young architects around the world, while responding to design challenges in Iraq", the 2019 edition of the Dewan Award for Architecture aims to create a high-level professional environment and to satisfy the urban and architectural needs in Iraq.
Last year's Dewan Award for Architecture, with the theme, "School in the Iraqi Marshes," was an immense success, attracting widespread attention from architects and those interested in Iraqi affairs.
Umma Park in Baghdad was selected as the subject for the award's second edition, with the promise of attracting high-level design talents from across the globe, further supporting the industry through developing intelligent, sustainable, aesthetically-pleasing and functional solutions for the proposed design challenge.
The award was established through a fund allocated by Dewan Architects + Engineers under the leadership of Mohammed Al Assam, founder and managing partner at Dewan.
This year, entrants need to draft a detailed proposal to redevelop Baghdad's Umma Park, which has been all but abandoned as a social space in Baghdad.
The pulsing heart of Baghdad's social life since the 1930s, due to economic neglect, and most recently war, the area has gone into rapid decline.
Speaking ahead of this year's award, Mr Al Assam commented:
"We can't wait to review all the submissions, along with Tamayouz' independent jury panel of leading experts in their field, who will be responsible for selecting the best designs for developing Umma Park."
"We have been involved with the Tamayouz Excellence Award for several years now as we really see the value in initiatives like this - both for the burgeoning architects and designers who get involved, as well as for Iraq itself," he added.
The award aims to empower young, up and coming architects, providing them with both the experience and professional guidance crucial to excelling in the industry.
Winners of the programme will earn hands on project experience at Dewan Architects + Engineers.
This year, the top three entrants will be invited to the Tamayouz Award Annual Ceremony with flights and accommodation covered (the host city will be announced shortly), while the overall winner will be rewarded with six months (renewable up to one year) employment at Dewan, with a generous salary, or dedicated prize money.
"The Dewan Award for Architecture" is the newest award to be established as part of the Tamayouz Excellence Award programme which champions and celebrates the best of architecture in Iraq and around the world.
Engineers, architects, students and designers are invited to submit their plans and proposals, either as individuals or in groups of up to four people, with multi-disciplinary teams encouraged.
Dewan Architects + Engineers are dedicated to supporting young talent - especially those that may not have access to international firms such as Dewan.
The company have also joined United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in order to help shape a sustainable future. UNGC's modus operandi hinges on responsible business practices to bring about sustainability and corporate social responsibility within the global economy.
